Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism is one of the most important books written by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche; it is also one of the most important books for Buddhism and the Dharma coming to the West. Before Cutting Through, Buddhism was a mysterious and ancient wisdom from the East. After Cutting Through, the dharma was about human beings living our lives day to day with insight, wisdom and compassion.

What is it about this book that continues to make it as helpful today as it was in 1974? When it comes to spiritual materialism, has anything really changed? When it comes to the genuine spiritual path, is it really different today than it was then? These are some of the questions we’ll explore together in this interactive and experiential exploration.

Jim Gimian, the publisher of the Shambhala Sun and author of several books about Sun Tzu’s Art of War, will lead a seven week course on Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism and its implications for life and practice today. He has been a student of Chögyam Trungpa since 1972, and served in a number of administrative and leadership roles in the 1970s and 1980s.

Sponsored by the Chögyam Trungpa Legacy Project, the Chronicles of CTR, and the Halifax Shambhala Centre.

“[Cutting Through is]... a perfect introduction that the true nature of life is about the acquisition of experience and spiritual knowledge over materialism and destructive behaviour.” -- Ian Astbury of the British band The Cult, December 7, 2010
