Cornwallis Park

Cornwallis Park is a new village between Annapolis Royal and Digby, Nova Scotia that was created from the remains of Canadian Forces Base [CFB] Cornwallis. CFB Cornwallis was originally a naval base and became the training center for English speaking troops for Canada. At its height it trained about 5,000 troops at a time. The infrastructure included 246 homes for officers, fifteen or so barrack blocks, training buildings, officers' mess facilities, dining and kitchen facilities, a huge drill hall and a smaller drill hall, docking and port facilities, a commissary, etc. The base even owned its own electric and telephone lines and its streets.

At the time the base was closed, it represented twenty percent of the economic activity in Annapolis and Digby Counties. The closure was devastating for the area, which was also being hit by the downturn in the fishery. Now there are over 1,000 jobs at Cornwallis Park—almost double the number of civilian jobs that existed when the base was operational, and these jobs are very diverse, involving more than forty private employers and some government activity. The local economy is now on a more secure footing than in the days of the military base. For more information visit:
