Brillant moon and long life

Posted: August 19, 2010

By Bill Karelis

I attended the movie on the life of His Holiness Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, Brilliant Moon, by Neten Choling Rinpoche, as well as the long life empowerment bestowed on 1,000 or more students of many lineages by Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche Friday, August 13th, 2010, at the Boulder Theatre. There were other events I did not attend, such as the tea and rice ceremony and the children's blessing at the Boulder Shambhala Center, and a weekend program at Phuntsok Choling, the Mangala Shri Bhuti Center of Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche, in Ward, outside of Boulder, and the visit of the entourage to the stupas along the Colorado Front Range.

The events I witnessed were truly a mahasangha celebration, reminiscent of the visit to Boulder two years ago of the XVIIth Gyalwa Karmapa.

Brilliant Moon, the movie, for those of us who knew the previous generation of great tulkus, was truly moving. Many were touched, and no student of the Dharma in attendance could miss the downpour of enlightened mind. When the photo of His Holiness Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and the Vidyadhara popped up on the screen, there was an audible gasp from the crowd.

Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche, now 17, has his father's sense of humor (the other Choling Rinpoche, the eldest son of Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, a very amusing emanation), and a wonderful, soft presence. He said, "My voice is boring, but that doesn't mean I am bored," and made other asides, in the process of explaining the abhisheka we were receiving from him. The tulkus there, reverently rapt by his presence, signaled the feeling that an incomparable tulku had indeed been reborn. They were clearly watching like hawks, both with devotion, and with care that he had gotten and would continue to receive full and proper education.

"I was amazed that somehow the overwhelming blessing of His Holiness, whom I had the privilege to see and hear teach on many occasions, somehow transmitted through these events. The work of Mangala Shri Bhuti captured the admiration: staff impeccably dressed, service-oriented, protective and awake--I felt with pride the living quality of that particular transmission from the Vidyadhara. The presence of Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche, our host, was warm and attentive. He made the announcements during the empowerment, and when Lady Konchok and Lama Pegyal showed up at the last minute, he made sure they were properly seated on the dias, and escorted Lady Konchok to receive the abhisheka substances from Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche. He and the Mangala Shri Bhuti sangha, assisted by many from other sanghas, well created the seat and environment for the Khyentse Yangsi emanation to manifest.

"I saw hundreds of our own sangha I have not seen in many moons, and basked, with everyone, in a true, harmonious gathering of the larger Buddhist community, not only from Colorado, but also from around the region.
