Judy would have been 90 today. She was my dharma sister, my chosen mother, and my beautiful friend. Because of Judy I dove deep into the dharma, because of Judy I met the loves of my life — my children — and because of Judy I better understand the true meaning of compassion.
We met sometime around 1986 when I moved to Montreal and went to the Dharmadhatu to attend a public talk on the Sacred Path of the Warrior. Judy was coordinating. She was so warm, welcoming and her energy so magnetizing – I just wanted to know where this woman plugged in at night! We became friends, rode our bicycles to volunteer at Sun Youth helping sub-Saharan refugees adjust to the culture and climate in Quebec, and co-hosted many a Shambhala Training level. In 1989, for the wedding of one of her sons, she asked if her best friend – Beverley Webster – could stay at my apartment and so I met the future grandmother of my children. To complete the karmic connection, my daughter Ceilidh was born this same day, on Judy’s birthday.
Many have shared the same sentiments about Judy – her kindness, her curiosity, and her zest for life. May her memory be a blessing.
