John was the embodiment of the Kusung way of warriorship. He was steady, awake, attentive and kind to all he encountered - starting of course with the Vidyadahra and extending to all who entered into the precincts of the Court. I especially respected and honored his unflappable presence - in any and all situations. I'm sure there was more going on 'inside' but John never allowed his own dramas to taint the experience of being listened to and served elegantly. I recall pointing to him as a training example. As Kusung Dapön I needed to be aware and responsive to the various ripples in the stream as best I could. John was a cool pond of reliable steadiness whom I know the Dorje Dradul looked forward to working with as much as I did. He was quiet but not reticent - well put together, but not a show off, ready, ready, ready. I only wish that John was able to be of more regular service than his life circumstance would allow from his base on the west coast.
