April 21, 1932 – May 20, 2025
Our dear dharma brother, John Osajima, passed peacefully during the night of May 20. John was at the heart of the Berkeley Shambhala Center for over 50 years. He first met Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche in 1976 and went on to become one of his devoted Kusung for many years.
John designed many aspects of our beautiful shrine room and taught programs in Buddhism, Shambhala, and particularly Dharma Art. He had great dignity and kindness, and touched the lives of many students as they first entered their paths of practice and study.
He will be missed and cherished by all of those who knew him. John is survived by his wife, Geraldine Ferri, his daughters, Rachel and Louise, and his grandchildren, Catherine and John.
Thank you to the Northern California Shambhala for getting this information to the Chronicles.

I was blessed to have him as my MI for about 25 years.
He generously passed on everything he could about the Dharma.
The most important transmission I received was John’s love for Chögyam Trungpa
Rinpoche and his deep devotion to the Dharma.
His love was so profound that I’ve had many dreams of Trungpa Rinpoche, and I regard him as my root guru without seeing him.
John was a decent, uncompromisingly honest, and yet gentle human being.
He is present everywhere in my mind and heart.
I was so lucky to have John as my MI at a KCL Dathun. He was kind, steady, insightful, and inspiring. I remember one interview when I was full of turbulent emotions and great ideas. "Just trust the outbreath and let the technique do it's work" was John's only comment. He continues to colour my path in Shambhala and I'm ever grateful to him. May he travel well, indeed.
I remember working on a poster with John in the late 70's. All thoughts of time and achievement vanished as he slowly moved the snow lion and text around and contemplated them. And somehow he managed to get me into that space as well. A true friend indeed.
John's ability to teach to the essence of the point was always well appreciated. This morning I was just remembering when John came to teach a level 3 up in Sonora with Jesse Miller and Gene Tashima. We called them the Three Amigos and I remember they stayed up late into the night talking and bringing the fullness of the spirit of the teaching to full light in that night. Merci John for your love, life and compassion. You willl be missed. Pamela
I remember teaching Shambhala Art with John, he was wonderfully creative and also insightful, I still have his outlines! Travel well, John, Love, Elaine
John was a wonderful friend and inspiring fellow sangha member. Truly brilliant and dedicated to helping to create a wakeful environment for all.
John was the embodiment of the Kusung way of warriorship. He was steady, awake, attentive and kind to all he encountered - starting of course with the Vidyadahra and extending to all who entered into the precincts of the Court. I especially respected and honored his unflappable presence - in any and all situations. I'm sure there was more going on 'inside' but John never allowed his own dramas to taint the experience of being listened to and served elegantly. I recall pointing to him as a training example. As Kusung Dapön I needed to be aware and responsive to the various ripples in the stream as best I could. John was a cool pond of reliable steadiness whom I know the Dorje Dradul looked forward to working with as much as I did. He was quiet but not reticent - well put together, but not a show off, ready, ready, ready. I only wish that John was able to be of more regular service than his life circumstance would allow from his base on the west coast. Ki ki John, just sharing these few thoughts brings a tear to my eye and a sigh in my heart...another blade of Mukpo grass touches the field of our well served path...Marty KDKK ret.
I lived in Berkeley in the mid-80’s and I remember Jon as a deeply kind person, especially to people who were relatively new to the sangha and the Kasung. He had a way of being both fatherly and brotherly at the same time. I still have the feeling of that kindness all these years later.
I haven’t seen John for many years but remember him with incredible fondness. He was like a gentle giant, welcoming, warm and humorous. His white wisp of hair in front of his head always stood out. I heard that Trungpa Rinpoche called him Mt Fuji.
One time John was sitting in front of me during a long sit and suddenly crashed over to the side—just like a mountain falling over.
I wish John love in his ongoing journey.
