Another recollection about the origins of oryoki in the sangha
A few months before the 1980 Seminary, Lady Lila Rich led a dathun at (then) RMDC, during which She first introduced oryoki. Soon after, 3 of us who were at the dathun (Liz Southward, Lila’s brother Charles, & myself) attended 1980 Seminary & were tasked with introducing oryoki to the community. This involved teaching oryoki to everyone during the first two weeks, teaching participants how to serve, and then one of us, at the one oryoki meal each day, overseeing 30 servers. -Jane Cohen
