If there is one universal human experience we all share it’s love, loss, death and grief. Our speakers will share with you how their meditation practice and training have been an intimate and inseparable part of their journey through grief.

Following the panel discussion the audience will be invited to ask questions or to share their own experiences of grief on their path. We will close with a reception with light refreshments and an opportunity to purchase a copy of Miriam’s book Suddenly Without Warning: A Mother’s Journey Through Grief.

THE SPEAKERS 

Miriam Tarcov was a long time student of the Ven. Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche and served as Deputy Director of External Affairs for Vajradhatu and Nalanda Foundation. She was the second editor-in-chief of The Vajradhatu Sun, now known as the Lion’s Roar. She has worked and volunteered in the nonprofit sector in the U.S. and Canada.

Her beloved son, Joshua, died in a car accident in 1987. She recently published the book, Suddenly Without Warning: A Mother’s Journey Through Grief. Her previous books are Mandala and The Feminine: Spacious As The Sky.

Jonathan Barbieri was part of the first Shambhala Directors Training with Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche in the late 1970′s. Since then, he has taught extensively throughout North America. Jon has been engaged in several livelihood pursuits including being a consultant to cities and counties on workforce development and the creation of contemplative cohousing communities. He was formerly the executive director of Shambhala Mountain Center. 

Jon’s wife, Adana McKenna Barbieri, after a recurrence of cancer, died peacefully in August of 2023.

Bryan Welch is an entrepreneur, writer and farmer who previously ran the companies that published Mother Earth News, the Utne Reader and Mindful Magazine. He is a Buddhist who counts among his most important teachers Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche and Dudjom Lingpa.

His son, Noah, died in 2013 as a result of alcoholism and drug addiction. His new book, The Gift of a Broken Heart, is scheduled for release this fall. His previous book, Beautiful and Abundant won a Nautilus Book Award. He is married to Carolyn Adams Welch and they raise cattle and sheep on their ranch near Lawrence, KS.

Colin grew up in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He began ngöndro practice under Dzogchen Pönlop Rinpoche at twenty-four years old while his mother Deirdre was dying of lung cancer. He has dedicated his life to supporting the activity of the dharma and the mahasangha of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche. He is the Program Director for the Foundation for Enlightened Society and Practice & Events Coordinator at the Boulder Shambhala Center.

His parents Ron and Deirdre, close students of Trungpa Rinpoche, adopted him at birth. His life experience includes the pain and joys of adoption, Sun Camp, alcoholism and addiction, the Buddhadharma, near death experiences, meeting his guru, and the journey from hopelessness to sanity.

THE MODERATOR

Judith L. Lief is a Buddhist teacher, writer, and editor. She was a close student of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, who empowered her as a teacher, and she has edited many of his books including The Profound Treasury of the Ocean of Dharma volumes and Milarepa. She has been a teacher and practitioner for over 35 years and continues to teach and lead retreats throughout the world. Lief is also active in the field of death and dying and is the author of Making Friends with Death.
