A Brief History of Tassajara

From Native American Sweat Lodges to Pioneering Zen Monastery

with a Foreword by David Chadwick from Cuke Press,
a project of Cuke Archives

This book is based on a scrapbook that sat for years in the office of Tassajara Springs, Zen Mountain Center, deep in the mountains of Monterey County, California. It was put together by Marilyn McDonald who was a frequent guest at Tassajara from the mid-seventies to mid-eighties. From the day she arrived she was fascinated with the history of the place, did extensive research and many interviews. Marilyn passed away January, 2017, and a combination of her friends, family, and a few of us Zennies put a lot of effort into polishing it up and making it widely available.

Basic Goodness Is Like a Sneeze

When we talk about basic goodness, we are not talking in terms of good and bad, but we are talking about unconditional health or unconditional goodness, without any reference point. Basic goodness is something like a sneeze. When you sneeze, there is no time to create or refer to a reference point. You just sneeze, or you just cough. Similarly, when a person has an orgasm, there’s no room or time to compare that experience with anything else. That simplicity and fundamental healthiness and that capability of having your own personal experience is called basic goodness, which does not have to be compared to basic badness.
